How the truthY score works

For each topic, outlets are grouped by the story they tell. Two outlets tell the same story when they report the same core facts — the same key event, figures (death toll, dollar amount, vote count), who did what, and the same basic interpretation — not merely when they cover the same subject. Each group lists the specific facts it agrees on. A source's score on a topic is the share of outlets covering it that report the same core facts it does — if 8 of 10 report the same facts, each of those 8 scores 80% and the 2 telling a different story score 20%.

A source's overall truthY score below is cumulative and covers every top story since tracking began (not just the latest cycle), so one lucky snapshot can't swing it. Crucially, a story an outlet skipped entirely — a strike — counts as a 0% topic: the score is its points earned divided by all the top stories it was there for, so both alignment and breadth of coverage matter. High = it shows up and runs with the pack; low = it either sits stories out or often tells a different one. This measures peer alignment, not truth itself — being alone doesn't make an outlet wrong, only unusual. The count columns are all-time running totals.

Each topic's own page shows that cycle's per-topic scores. Sources that have covered fewer than 2 topics are too thin a sample to rank and appear as provisional; a source that has shared none of the top topics appears last, tagged no shared topics.
